"The idea of
the guild was so simple and it met so real a need that is was gladly welcomed,
and from the first spread rapidly and justified its existence by its usefulness."
Rt. Rev.
Edward Osborne, D.D. Christmas 1917
How does this organization differ from the many other nursing and healthcare
professional organizations? The Guild is not concerned with the technical
details of the nursing or healthcare professions. Rather it is concerned
with helping its members realize and rise to the dignity of their vocation.
The purpose of the Guild
of Saint Barnabas for Nurses & Allied Healthcare Professionals is
to assist in the process of developing a deeper spirituality within the
lives of the members in their vocational life, and to offer further enrichment
through shared educational and fellowship opportunities.
It helps members to be good Christians, "Strong under the strain of their
particular calling as health care professionals, brave bearers of its
burdens and zealous in fulfilling the tasks of the profession." The Guild
"fosters piety and encourages hopefulness" in its members.
Nurses and Healthcare professionals from all Christian denominations and
those interested in supporting this organization are welcome as members.
Rule
of Life
- To remember the Guild and
my patients in my daily prayers.
- To read the Bible each day.
- To be spiritually present
and sensitive to the needs of those to whom I minister.
- To wear the Guild medal
whenever possible and to give a friendly greeting to others wearing
the medal.
- To promote fellowship and
mutual helpfulness.
The
Saint Barnabas Guild Prayer
Almighty God, who didst call
thy Holy Apostle Barnabas to follow the steps of thy Blessed Son in ministering
to the sick and suffering: Grant to us the same spirit of consolation,
that by gentleness and love, in faithfulness and patience, we may serve
thy afflicted children. Support us in our work; indue us with wisdom and
skill; give us sympathy for one another; deliver us in temptation; and
at the last bring us to thy rest and peace, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
