Church in the World
Living out Christ’s call for reconciliation and justice within the global community, the diocese and our own congregation:

The Bishop’s Fund for Children is a ministry of the Diocese of Connecticut begun in October 1994 by Bishop Clarence N. Coleridge.  The fund asks Episcopalians to hold up in prayer children at risk in Connecticut; become involved as volunteers in their local communities working on behalf of children at risk; and contribute financially to the Bishop's Fund.  The Fund in turn supports organizations and agencies in Connecticut -- church and non-church – that provide direct services to children at risk.  An annual St. Nicholas' Day appeal is made but the opportunity to contribute to The Bishop's Fund for Children is ongoing.  To make a gift in support of children at risk, send your check to: The Bishop's Fund for Children, 1335 Asylum Avenue, Hartford, CT 06105.  A 5K run/walk is held each May to raise money for the fund and its programs.  The Cathedral often sends runners and walkers.  A volunteer is needed who would serve as the contact person for promoting the Fund’s activities and to recruit participants for the annual 5K run/walk. Center City Churches/Hands-on-Hartford is an agency that began with 8 congregations in 1969, the Cathedral being a founding member, and has grown to 12 churches and many other Hartford-area supporting congregations. Its goal is to work in partnership with others, strengthen community in Hartford by responding faithfully to people in need through programs that change lives and renew human possibility. In 2002, the Cathedral Chapter voted to make a no-interest loan of $300,000 from the Cathedral’s endowment funds to enable Center City Churches to purchase Peter's Retreat near Hartford Hospital, a shared residence and support program for adults living with AIDS. The MANNA feeding program hosted at the Cathedral during the week is administered by CCC. Volunteers are sought to represent the Cathedral on the Center City Council or Board. Other volunteer opportunities are also available. Back to top.

The Cathedral is a member of the Consortium of Endowed Episcopal Parishes.  The Consortium is an association of 110 Episcopal Churches from all over the country with endowments of $1 million or more.  Each year, lay and clergy representatives from these churches gather together at an annual conference to dialogue, discern our individual and communal calls, and collaborate with other churches and Episcopal institutions on how best to face the challenges of being Episcopalian in the 21st century.   Being a part of the Consortium community helps celebrate, inspire and equip our parish leaders for effective leadership, stewardship and transformation in the Church and the world.  In 2007, the Consortium’s annual conference will be held in Fort Lauderdale, FL March 1-3. An Episcopal Peace Fellowship chapter has recently been formed at the Cathedral.  EPF is a membership organization composed of those who commit themselves to the following statement:  For Christians working to establish God's kingdom here on earth, the violence which permeates our society demands a Christian response.  As a member of the Episcopal Peace fellowship, I join with other Episcopalians who seek a deliberate, Christian response to violence that is in keeping with our baptismal covenant to"...strive for justice and peace among all people...."  In loyalty to the person, teaching and Lordship of Jesus Christ, my conscience commits me to His way of redemptive love: to pray, study, and work for peace, and to renounce, so far as possible, participation in war, militarism, and all other forms of violence.  In fellowship with others of like mind, I will work to discover and create alternatives to violence and to build a culture of peace.  As a member of the holy Catholic Church, I urge the Episcopal Church in accordance with our baptismal vows, "to renounce the evil powers of this world which corrupt and destroy the creatures of God" and to wage peace across all boundaries, calling upon people everywhere to repent, to forgive, and to love.  The Cathedral EPF gathers to discuss issues of peace and invite participation in prayer vigils.  New individual members are welcome. George Beach Apartments is an apartment building located on Allen Place in Hartford jointly owned by the Cathedral, Trinity Church in Hartford and St. John’s in West Hartford.  It serves primarily elderly, disabled and low-income tenants providing safe, decent and affordable housing.  The president of the board rotates among the three rectors (or dean).  The Cathedral also has two lay representatives to the board.  In addition to management responsibilities, the three churches also provide liturgical and pastoral support to the residents.  Volunteers are needed to be lay members of the Board of Trustees. The Greater Hartford Interfaith Coalition for Equity and Justice is a faith-based organization that is drawn from the region’s diverse religious communities, and reflects the common values and shared commitments to social and economic justice.  ICEJ works shall vigorously address the most pressing issues, problems, inequities and opportunities throughout the Greater Hartford area, in order to achieve a just and righteous community for every child and adult.  Members of the coalition begin by acknowledging that racism, classism, sexism, segregation and indifference are at the root of every evil in our region, and will require confrontation and healing in each and every one of our mission efforts.  Its intention is to effect community-wide, systemic change through legislative advocacy and reform, community action and renewal, uniting in cooperation with those groups and organizations in the region that share our faith-based values and commitments. Millennium Development Goals  The General Convention of our church is supporting the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).  The MDGs are an eight-pronged declaration that has at its core the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger by the year 2015.  The MDGs goals urge each diocese, congregation and parishioner to give 0.7 percent toward the MDGs by July 7, 2007; i.e., by 07/07/07.

The Millennium Development Goals are:
1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2. Achieve universal primary education
3. Promote gender equality and empower women
4. Reduce child mortality
5. Improve maternal health
6. Combat HIV and AIDS, malaria and other diseases
7. Ensure environmental sustainability
8. Create a global partnership for development with a focus on debt, aid and trade. Back to top.
