Position Summary

Christ Church Cathedral is the cathedral for the Episcopal Church in Connecticut. The cathedral has a vocation in God’s mission both in the city of Hartford, in the Episcopal Church in Connecticut and as a Cathedral in the 21st century.

The Cathedral seeks a full-time Canon to assist the Dean in the general life, ministry, outreach and worship of the Cathedral Congregations. The Canon is called by the Dean and reports to the Dean.

The Canon will work to provide leadership for the spiritual welfare, pastoral care, Christian formation programs and worship life of the Cathedral’s faith community. While the Dean bears the ultimate responsibility for liturgical oversight, the coordinating and executing of liturgy is a shared responsibility with Cathedral Staff Canons.

The Canon for Congregational Development and Pastoral Care works collaboratively with the Dean, the Canon for Latino Ministries, the Cathedral staff, and lay leaders.

Specific responsibilities of the Canon for Congregational Development and Pastoral Care include:

  • Develops and facilitates Christian Formation programs, working in collaboration with lay leaders, for all ages and include programs which foster spiritual growth and deepen spirituality.
  • Provides for and oversees pastoral care for all English-speaking Cathedral members, including members who are homebound and those in the hospital; also includes pastoral counseling and pre- marital counseling.
  • Develops and facilitates Evangelism efforts with an outward focus to the community surrounding our Cathedral, including Capital Community College, work commuters and residential settings.
  • Assists the Dean in providing liturgical leadership for Cathedral worship, including our Church by the Pond service, and takes specific responsibility for the shaping, leading and coordination Wednesday noon services.
  • Provides support to our Cathedral Healing Ministries program.
  • Provides leadership/support to our Cathedral Ministry Teams and develops new teams and programs as needed.
  • Assists the Dean in providing support and leadership to the Cathedral Congregation’s Committee.
  • Develops and executes Annual Stewardship Campaigns in collaboration with cathedral clergy and Stewardship Team.
  • Provides liturgical and pastoral support to George Beach Homes.
  • Supports our Church by the Pond ministries.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean.

Qualifications & Specific Skills

  • An ordained person with an understanding of his/her/their unique gifts and the desire to support others in discovering and using their unique gifts as they participate in God’s mission.
  • Strong ability to articulate his/her/their relationship with Jesus and commitment to God’s mission.
  • A heart for pastoral care with sensitivity and ability to be present.
  • At least three years with Congregational Development experience
  • Ability to teach and oversee leadership development.
  • Strong preaching skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and creatively with both lay and clergy leaders.
  • Excellent skills in organizing people and administering programs.
  • Cultural competency and compassionate leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to self-start.
  • Ability to plan ahead and be flexible at the same time.
  • Strong familiarity with Episcopal Church structure, language, polity, and culture.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Technical proficiency with office systems, software, and social media.
  • Knowledge of the Spanish language appreciated, not required.

Office Assistant & Event Coordinator

Reports to/Supervisor: Accountant & Office Manager

Position Summary:

The Office Assistant & Event Coordinator will be responsible to maintain communication with all vendors and ensuring proper coordination of Cathedral use of space. The Office Assistant & Event Coordinator is the primary staff responsible for coordinating and implement event set-up. This position will also provide general administrative support to the Assistant to the Dean, the Canon for Congregational Development & Pastoral Care, and the Office Manager.

 This is a part time position of 20 hours a week. This position provides for flexible schedule. This also includes the employer’s contribution for FICA as well as Employer’s portion of retirement plan (403B).

Duties and responsibilities

The Office Assistant & Event Coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Communicating and scheduling vendors for building related matters.
  • Coordinating Cathedral use of the space for in house groups. ECCT, and outside groups.
  • Coordinating event physical space set- up, in consultation with Accountant & Office Manager
  • Providing administrative support to the Canon for Congregational Development & Pastoral Care and the Canon for Latino Ministries (Manage canon’s calendar, stewardship campaign mailings, congregations’ general mailings etc.) in consultation with Office Manager.
  • Providing administrative support to the Assistant to the Dean and to the Office Manager
  • Working and coordinating with the logistics employee.
  • Attending weekly staff meetings and meetings that impact employee’s responsibilities.
  • Other tasks as assigned.
  • Must be able to maintain and honor confidentiality
  • Excellent organization, administrative and communication skills
  • Must be able to exercise initiative and judgment as an independent worker.
  • Must be able to respond to changing needs throughout the daily and weekly schedule
  • Must be certified by Safe Church Training and Sexual Harassment Prevention.
